The superficial answer is that Search Engine Optimization will help Anthropic grow its online presence; however, the deeper answer is that Search Engine Optimization will help shape its narrative and guide the perceptions that individuals, companies, and governments will have about Anthropic. What does the word "Anthropic" actually mean, and why does it matter for the future of search?

Anthropic derives from the Greek root word anthrōpos, which means "man" or "human being." Before the AI company, a study was developed in philosophy called the anthropic principle. In short, the principle explains that a conscious observer — the human being — experiences existence as such because the universe has fundamental properties that allow for it.

But at its core, one can derive from the principle that everything relates to the human being — because if even one property, say hydrogen, was missing, human beings would not be here to read this sentence, let alone think of AI. Moreover, the same hydrogen that makes water for human beings to drink is the same hydrogen that powers massive AI data centers.

So for AI to exist, water must exist, and for water to exist, hydrogen must exist, and for hydrogen to exist, everything else must exist, because the elements that make up matter — anything physical — were built within stars, then scattered throughout the universe when stars explode. Those scattered elements went on to form everything. In other words, human beings all come from the same stuff that makes up the universe, and so everything relates to our existence.

And so, the anthropic principle, and therefore the word Anthropic, is not something that relates to human beings — which is the general definition given — it is actually the fact that everything relates to the human being. This matters for the future of humanity because the manner in which we understand AI as it advances — how we relate to it — will go on to shape the future of technological advancement, which is part and parcel of humanity's advancement.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing content so that AI systems recognize, reference, and recommend it when generating answers. Despite what many people believe, GEO is not at all different from SEO; it has simply become part of it. By correctly optimizing for SEO, you invariably optimize for AI engines, because they use the information from broader search engines for citations in the first place.

I have ranked nearly every single search query I have targeted for either individuals or businesses on AI systems, using a process that I developed from my own experience, and which I still consider SEO. In fact, I consider SEO as the process of building a narrative. Most recently, I created a narrative for the painter Olga Buzdalova. Using SEO and GEO, I ranked her on the first page of Google, and now when you type the words "Astral Artist in Calgary," AI Overviews cite her as the single best artist in Calgary for her category.

Is traditional SEO dead because of AI?

If search engines still exist, and AI uses information from search engines to discover, retrieve, and reference information, then traditional SEO is far from dead; in fact, it is more alive than ever.

The only thing that is dead are the days where verification was implicit in the work being done for SEO. There was a time when one could not create effective SEO content unless they knew how to write, how to research, and how to strategize of their own wit. That changed when AI made it possible for anyone to produce content; however, it's not that anyone can now rank effectively — it's simply that the ones who can are often lost in a sea of incompetence. Which is why Google updated its ranking guidelines from E-A-T to E-E-A-T. This update, along with others, is done to effectively separate the good content from the bad, the true from the false, the Experiences from the so-called "experts."

For 8 years, between 2014 and 2022, Google's quality content guideline was E-A-T, and just one month after the release of OpenAI, they added Experience. A curious thing: why bother adding Experience when Expertise was already there, and why a month after AI usage became widespread?

Because a good writer can mimic expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness — and AI can write almost flawlessly — but the one thing you can't buy is experience. Someone can use AI to write a review about a very important health product but know nothing about the science, or without even having tried it themselves, and the person reading that review can trust it without knowing if the creator is trustworthy or not. So, experience is the only thing validating E-A-T, and experience is fundamentally a human quality — something AI does not possess.
